Toy Story 0001 (soundtrack) (2024)

Toy Story is the soundtrack album for the 1995 Disney/Pixar animated film of the same name. The songs and score were written by Randy Newman, and the score was performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony on the Sony Scoring Stage.[1] It was released through Walt Disney Records on November 22, 1995, the same day of the film's release. A cassette and CD single release of "You've Got a Friend in Me" was released on April 12, 1996, in order to promote the soundtrack's release.

The soundtrack was remastered in 2006 and although it is no longer available physically, the album is available for purchase digitally in retailers such as iTunes.

Background[]

Toy Story is the first animated film that Randy Newman scored. The filmmakers wanted an orchestral score and an Americana sound, thinking that it would "warm up" the film, should the computer animation appear "cold".[1][2] Initially, the filmmakers did not want the film to have songs. Chris Montan suggested that, rather than having the characters sing the songs, the songs would be played over scenes, a compromise that the filmmakers agreed to.[3]

Tony Fucile thought that Newman could be a good composer for animated films, which he mentioned to Andrew Stanton. Stanton, who listened to the score to Avalon while writing Toy Story, agreed, and presented the idea to John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Joe Ranft, Bonnie Arnold and Ed Catmull.[3]

Newman wrote "You've Got a Friend in Me" before composing the score, and before the scene for which it was written entered production.[1] He later included references to "You've Got a Friend in Me" and "I Will Go Sailing No More" in the score. Because the film is animated, he thought it would be necessary to use Mickey Mousing, which he saw as a challenge.[4]

Critical reception[]

The soundtrack has received praise for its "sprightly, stirring score." Despite the album's critical success, the soundtrack only peaked at number 94 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
