Nantucket gas stations might be selling some bad ethanol

30 cars and half of Nantucket's post office delivery trucks reported problems with their fuel pumps last week, possibly due to gasoline blended with ethanol sold at gas stations on the island serviced by Harbor Fuel Corporation. Sunday's Nantucket Inquirer & Mirror reports on the troubles on the island, which could be caused by the ethanol, according to Harbor Fuel president John Stackpole, who denied there was any problem with the fuel.

Muscle cars continue to fetch big bucks

It's not just classicFerraris and rare Jaguars raking in the bucks when the auction hammer drops -- extraordinary specimens surviving (or recreated)from the muscle car era continue to bring six and seven-figure bids, the New York Times reports. Why would cars that went for a few grand -- brand new -- be going for over a million dollars forty years later? Because rich boys (and girls) like their toys, and they're wiling to pay for them, the paper

Original Pony Car

Retrospective: 1964 Ford Mustang

Ford General Manager Lee Iacocca probably didn't fully realize just what he was about to tap into with his new low-cost "personal car," the 1964 Mustang -- sort of like Jed Clampett, who inadvertently struck oil while he was out huntin' coon.In the early 1960s, there was no "youth market" (as such) for automobiles -- and the term "pony car" had yet to be coined. But Iacocca -- who had risen from o

Ten best used cars for 2006

While there are plenty of lists of top vehicles for virtually any category (e.g., best economy car, most exotic under one million, ugliest mid-sized sedan in white, etc.) most show only the latest models. If you don't have the financial resources for a brand new set of wheels, here are ten used cars, broken down by category, that won't hurt your wallet quite as much:

Iowa State researchers are makin' ethanol the moldy way

Cellulose ethanol is one step closer. Ethanol can now be somewhat easily made from corn fibers, thanks to a process that uses mold and was discovered at Iowa State and announced last week. The fibers, created when producer make corn syrup, are often turned into animal feed. If they The discovery could boost ethanol production by about 4 percent (160 million gallons) a year, said Hans van Leeuwen, an Iowa State professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering in a press release.

Think Different. Apple + DeLorean

Who knows why DeLoreans often find themselves the canvas upon which mad scientists paint their insanity? Doc Brown and his flux capacitor notwithstanding, Ryan Brandys decided to take Apple Computer to task and think different when it came to building a custom carputer.

NASCAR hit by high gas prices too

It's easy to take gasoline prices for granted when it comes to NASCAR, but the high-octane fuel used by competitors burns quickly under race conditions, drawing on some 6,000 gallons of fuel in a weekend. Supposing gas is at $2.83 a gallon, which is aboutthe going rate for regular in many U.S. cities, that means that gas for a race weekend comes out to about $17,000... and that's assuming pump gas - NASCAR motors run on far more exotic (and costly) 110-oc
